Ricardo Mayorga packs power in his punching good enough to defeat Vernon Forrest twice.

Trinidad vs. Mayorga, the prince versus the beast.

Boxing is by nature a brutal activity. Punches, violence, wounds, power, pain and sometimes even death...

But despite the violent nature of the sport there have been practitioners of the "sweet science" that indeed inspired the use of such phrase. Yes, they were fighters, sure they punched, they engaged in battles, received and inflicted pain, but they did it with oh such class and distinction.

Sugar Ray Robinson is clearly the first name that comes to mind. But there are others... Roy Jones, Jr., the supremely under appreciated Ricardo "Finito" Lopez, Oscar de la Hoya and more to the point, Felix "Tito" Trinidad (41-1, 34 KOs) the distinguished "boxeador" from Cupey Alto, Puerto Rico.

These are fighters that make boxing a science, who combine superior technique with plenty of heart and valor. Yes, they can be devastating with their accuracy and power, but they carry out their pugilistic trade with astounding professionalism and class.

Then there are the brutes. Fighters that go out there solely with the intent to hurt people. Street thugs that use violence to settle matters on and off the ring. Punks with gloves given the golden opportunity to freely express their vile nature under a legal setting provided by professional boxing.

Mike Tyson is clearly exhibit #1. But there have been many others, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Vinnie Pazienza and a recent specimen named Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga (27-4-1, 23 KOs).

Don't get me wrong. They are definitely magnets. Their raw violent nature often helps them score great knockouts, great victories, draw crowds, market the sport and obtain massive personal wealth.

Fans love to hate these guys.

That is why Saturday's fight at Madison Square Garden promises to be terrific. In one corner, a rusty but superb technician with dynamite on his gloves. In the other, a Nicaraguan wild man off the dusty streets of Managua seeking to make history and more money than he ever imagined.

Makes for a great fight. Makes for great television. Makes for great entertainment.
